Soup Diet to Lose Weight
Learn if you can lose 10 to 20 pounds by eating chicken or vegetable soup for seven days.
The soup diet is a short-term, usually seven-day, eating plan based on portion-controlled meals and low-calorie vegetable or chicken soup. There is a variety of soup diet plans: the Good Housekeeping’s Amazing Soup Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, and the Chicken Soup Diet.
Good Housekeeping’s Amazing Soup Diet
The Amazing Soup Diet is based on portion-controlled meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and snacks in the form of a cup of vegetable soup, which has only 45 calories per cup. You cook a 12-quart stockpot of the vegetable soup for the whole week. The basic soup recipe has the following ingredients: chicken broth and vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage, green beans, pepper, zucchini, and spinach leaves. Each day you add some new ingredients to your soup to make a new flavor and avoid boredom. For example, when you add some boneless chicken breast and corn kernels to the basic recipe and then heat the soup to boiling, you get Mexican Chicken Soup.
Good Housekeeping claims that you can eat as much as you want and lose 20 pounds fast in the course of the Good Housekeeping’s soup diet. The claim is misleading, as it is impossible to lose than much fat within a week, no matter what diet plan you follow.
Cabbage Soup Diet
The cabbage soup diet, as the name implies, encourages heavy consumption of low-calorie cabbage soup. It is a radical weight loss approach. The diet lasts for 7 days and requires no long-term commitment. The diet allows only cabbage soup, some fresh fruits and vegetables during the first half of the week. Then the dieter can add some beef to the meals.
The cabbage soup diet is often cruised as being too low in protein and too high in sodium. Most dieters report feeling weak due to the lack of proper nutrition. The main diet claim is that it allows losing up to 10 pounds a week. However, most weight lost is water and muscle tissue, not fat.
The cabbage soup diet has some variations: the Sacred Heart Diet, the Russian Peasant Diet, the Military Cabbage Soup, the General Motors Diet, and the TJ Miracle Soup Diet. However, all organizations mentioned deny responsibility for inventing the diet.
Chicken Soup Diet
The chicken soup diet allows you to eat breakfast; all other meals are replaced with chicken soup you can eat till you are full. For breakfast you can have a cup of yogurt with some fruit salad or a cup of cereal with skim milk. The chicken soup diet lasts for seven days. No claim is made about how much weight the dieter can lose.
Remember that the soup diet is a short term weight loss eating plan. To achieve substantial weight loss and then avoid gaining weight back, long-term commitment to healthy eating and healthy living is required.
