How Much Water to Drink a Day

You should drink enough water to prevent dehydration and maintain health. Moreover, proper water intake is important for weight loss as fluids help the body metabolize fat. How much water you need depends on your health, weight, activity level and climate you live in. The main guideline is to drink enough fluids to satisfy your thirst. The rule “drink eight eight-ounce glassed of fluid a day” is widely used though it has no scientific evidence. The International Sports Medicine Institute recommends 1/2 to 2/3 ounce of water per pound of body weight, so a person weighing 160 pounds should drink about 10-13 glasses of water throughout the day depending on the activity level. Remember to drink your water throughout the day to avoid overloading your kidneys with too much water at once.
You may need more water if you live in a hot climate, exercise a lot or follow a high-fiber or high-protein diet. You may need less water if you have a kidney or bladder disease or take medications such as diuretics. Your doctor will tell you if you need to limit your fluid intake and how much water you should drink a day.
If you are bored with plain water, you can add limes, lemons or oranges to your water to make it taste better. Milk, herbal teas, broth, fruit and vegetable juices, tea and coffee are also counted as a part of your fluid intake. If you are on a calorie-controlled diet, remember that diluting your fruit juice and other high-calorie beverages with water helps you cut down your total caloric intake. Tea and coffee are almost calorie-free if you do not add milk or sugar. Even alcoholic beverages are counted towards the daily fluids total; however, if you drink beverages that are high in sugar, caffeine or alcohol, make sure to do so in moderation. Water is the most healthful beverage for hydration and weight loss.
