Food should be measured in the amount of steps it would take to burn off the energy derived from the food, not in calories?

Sounds like a good measurement

I was quite interested to read this, it certainly would make sense if you thought that way.

Imagine that extra portion of mash potato as 2 walks round the block- Certainly it'd make you think twice.
