There are several effective ways to lose weight, and what works for one individual, may not work for another. The key to losing weight is figuring out what works for your particular body type, and using this to its full potential.
Diet
Many people attempt extreme diets to lose weight. Although fad and celebrity diets may help the individual to lose weight quickly, they are in no way healthy or sustainable. These are the types of diets that are responsible for the contemporary epidemic known as 'yo-yo dieting'.
When drastically cutting calorie intake or carbohydrate intake, the body's metabolism slows, dramatically. This means that the little food that is consumed is stored away as fat (as the body is unsure when and where its next meal will be coming from). This means that, when normal eating is resumed, or if the dieter lapses and has a particularly large meal, the body will store the majority of the food as fat. This causes weight gain when the diet is stopped, often meaning the dieter will be heavier than when they first started the diet.
To combat this, one must aim to raise the body's metabolism instead of slowing it. This is simpler than it sounds. Instead of eating one or two small meals a day, one must eat several small meals across the day (ideally 6 small, healthy meals). This can be easily achieved by cooking meals in bulk that can be stored and reheated when needed. Easy to prepare meals like soups are perfect for this.
Exercise
Classically, cardio-vascular exercise has been used to aid in weight loss. Cardio is one of the best ways to burn calories. When a calorie deficit is created (more calories used than consumed), weight is lost as the body uses fat stores as an energy source. However, cardio isn't the only exercise that should be used if you'd like to lose weight.
Weight training is a great way to increase lean muscle mass, which acts to raise the body's metabolism, as well as creating a more athletic, toned physique. Plyometric exercise is also fantastic at raising the heart rate, burning calories, and building muscle. Plyometric exercises are short and fast paced explosive actions, for example knee-tuck jumps or burpees.
A combination of healthy eating (small meals at regular intervals) and a basic exercise regime is the most effective way to lose weight. Avoid expensive infomercial marketed exercise products and avoid diet plans that make bold claims. Steady weight loss is a long-term health benefit, as opposed to short-term fast paced weight loss, which is counterproductive in the long run. Soup recipes are a great way to begin a healthy and effective diet.
