While we write this off as fantasy, the real-life capabilities that spinach can give us are often underestimated. Here are some of spinach’s super powers that we often forget about.
It’s a Real-Life Super Food
You may hear that term thrown around loosely these days, but spinach brings true meaning to the word “super.” By eating spinach, you get a healthy dose of magnesium, iron, potassium, protein, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin K, folate, vitamins B2 and B6, dietary fiber, copper, omega-3 fatty acids, manganese, calcium, vitamin C, niacin, etc.
It’s the Perfect Diet Food
Along with all of the nutrients previously mentioned, spinach has a surprisingly low calorie count. Somehow, all at once, it manages to be packed with enough flavor to be considered a desired ingredient in many less-than-healthy dishes. While chip dip is not the best way to consume the vegetable, including a little bit of fat or oil with your dose of spinach actually helps your body absorb the nutrients better.

Spinach can grow in many types of climates and is fairly easy to cultivate. For those of us who don’t know what “cultivate” means, spinach can also be purchased at nearly every store anywhere. If spinach were to be adopted more heavily by every culture, it would jam-pack nutrients into their diets and better fight world hunger. For such an adaptable and affordable vegetable, it is depended on fairly infrequently for its insane amount of vitamins.
It Can Grow Strong Children
Along with protein and omega-3 fatty acids, spinach is loaded with iron. Iron is especially great for children and helps them grow steadily into healthy, strong adults. It may not have a Popeye-like effect, but spinach really could help your kids grow muscles with time. It also provides a good source of energy and serves a lot of the same purposes as red meat (but with fewer calories and saturated fat).
It Can Fight Cancer
Whoa! Did I just say that? Spinach is a good source of flavonoids, which in this case act as antioxidants to help protect you from diseases. At the same time, it contains roughly 13 different compounds that act as anti-cancer agents! While the world does not claim to have the answer to cancer, a diet full of spinach could be a likely contender (and pose as a preemptive strike against the disease). It also helps to keep your heart and colon healthy, which will help fight cancer in the long run.
It Can Slow the Aging Process
Okay, I really did just say that. Spinach has been proven to slow down the brain’s aging process and a spinach-rich diet will keep your brain sharper for longer. Besides positive effects on the brain, spinach contains the carotenoid “lutein,” one of the best ways to fight cataracts and other eye diseases. It also works as a sort of at-home microdermabrasion, with its moisture and skin-regenerating properties. If we all ate spinach every day, for every meal, who knows how much we could slow the aging process? At least we could all be clear-eyed, glowing, sharp-as-a-tack old people! Which is essentially immortality!
