Including fresh fruit and vegetables in our daily diets improves our health. They are packed with vitamins and nutrients that we wouldn’t otherwise get without artificial supplementation. As well as improving our general health, they can also aid greatly in weight loss.
Fresh fruit make an excellent snack, and when something like a cookie is replaced with a banana, the weight loss results can be dramatic. Cookies, chocolate bars and other junk foods contain high amounts of saturated fat as well as refined sugars, which are both the mortal enemies of anyone trying to lose weight. Although bananas contain sugar (making them sweet and excellent as a snack for those with sugar cravings), they are naturally sweet (no refined sugars), meaning they release their energy at a more constant rate and you avoid the insulin spike induced by processed sugar. This is much more desirable when trying to lose weight, as blood sugar spikes can be counterproductive to the body’s fat burning mechanisms.
Vegetables are even better for weight loss, since their sugar and fat content is extremely low. Although some can be high in carbohydrates (potatoes, etc) which can hinder weight loss if eaten in large amounts, generally, vegetables are extremely useful for burning fat. Fresh green vegetables are very high in fiber and very low in carbohydrates and fat. This is useful for weight loss, as they are filling and packed with nutrients, and they don’t contribute to substantial fat storage (unlike junk food high in fat and refined sugars).
Aim for five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. If your ultimate goal is weight loss, you should focus more on vegetables. Aim to eat fruit in the first part of the day so that the sugars they contain can be used as energy through the day. If you are partaking in a gym routine, have a piece of fruit (a banana is perfect) before working out, as the carbohydrates/sugar fruits contains will give you a pre-workout energy boost, making your gym session more effective.
The most important thing with a weight loss diet is to make sure all the ingredients are fresh, healthy, and balanced. Try to eat lean meat, fruit and vegetables every day, whilst avoiding anything frozen, processed, or from a fast food restaurant.
