Basal Metabolic Rate Calculator lets you estimate the number of calories your body burns when you are resting and the number of calories you need to maintain your current weight. If you want to lose weight, you can create a calorie deficit through exercises and diet. However, make sure to consult with your doctor first.

Your BMR depends on your weight
Can my BMR be LOWER?
I'm female, 5'8, currently 174 pounds. I get at least 60 minutes of moderate exercise per day, but have experienced significant weight gain (nearly 50 pounds) over the past 2-3 years with no change in eating habits or activity levels and no evidence of thyroid problems according to my doctor. If I eat anything close to the number of calories suggested by the BMR calculator, I gain weight rapidly.
In order to lose 1-2 pounds per week (which I've been doing for the past 5 weeks), I have to reduce calorie consumption to 1200 calories per day. My question is: is there any physiological way that a person's BMR could be lower than the formula says it is?
Can my BMR be LOWER?
A person's BMR can be lower than the formula says it is if, for example, the person has a metabolic disorder. You can get more information on metabolic diseases at Medline; however, please note that only your doctor can tell you if your metabolism is slower than average.
Most people have normal metabolism, and it is still difficult for them to lose weight. Calories add up quickly. You may forget about a snack or soda you had. Sometimes it is difficult to tell how much food a serving is and you can count calories from one serving when you actually had two servings.
You may think that you lose weight only on 1200-calorie diet when actually you eat more calories. If this is not the case and you eat only 1200 calories a day, I strongly recommend that you consult your dietitian before cutting your calories so dramatically. 1200-calorie diet is too low, and you may not get all the nutrients you need for health.
Thank you
Thank you for the information and the link.
I've been telling my doctor that I thought something more was going on -- even after the normal thyroid tests. I don't drink beverages with calories, and I count everything I eat to try to pack nutrition into that 1200 calorie limit.
I've finally managed to lose a total of 10 pounds this way (4 since my original post), but it really has been difficult. It feels like enough food -- the difficulty, as you said, is in ensuring nutrition.
It seemed strange that someone who never over-ate and always exercised would gain so much weight so suddenly; your response gives me a better idea of what to investigate. Thank you!
Low calorie intake
I have been intaking not more than 800 calories a day for 3 months now. I am currently 115 pounds, 5'6" and my BMR is 1500 calories. I have a very sedentary lifestyle and do not understand what's going on? If I need 1500 calories per day to maintain basic life activities ,how is my body getting all that?
Caution
Hi Sara. You are 115 pounds and are only consuming 800 calories a day. This is NOT a good thing, sweetheart. You body is NOT getting all that it needs. It is beginning to feed off of itself in order to get those denied calories. You may run into some serious medical issues if nutrition isn't changed drastically. Seizures, hair loss, amenorrhea (cessation of menstrual cycle), and more. Please, honey, talk to someone if you need help with your nutrition.
calorie intake
i am a 15yr old girl i weigh 10 stone and take in around 800 calories a day is this healthy
quick question
Hi, I'm 16, 5'8, and 134 pounds. I recently lost 40 pounds. How much more should I lose? I ate 1200 calories to get there and now I've been eating around 1000 or less. I also have not had my period in about 4 months. I'm not sure what to do. I'd appreciate some advice please. I am also feeling addicted to the thrill of watching the numbers on the scale get lower. I know this is bad, please help.
RE: quick question
I understand that you want to see results as soon as possible, but please listen to me. It is a must to consult your doctor before you even think of reducing your calorie intake to 1000 calories.
The question is why you think you need to lose weight? Your current weight is considered normal for your height and age.
You tell that you have not had your period in about 4 months. You must go and see your doctor. On the Internet, you can find general information, but only your doctor can examine you. Do it now.
BMR and weight
Hi I am 25 y/o 5'4" female at 140 lbs (recent gain due to sedentary lifestyle). I've calculated my BMR at approx 1423/day. I'm trying to lose 15 lbs with diet and exercise. I do an hour on the elliptical with free weights 4 days a week. Should i add that activity level to my BMR? When I do that and my BMR increases then do i make up the deficit to lose weight by eating 500 less cal per day from that new number. Or do i keep my sedentary bmr calc at 1423/day and diet 250 cal and burn 250 cal in the gym to get 500 less cal per day which would put me at less than 1000 cal/day? I thought it was bad to go less than 1200.
RE: BMR and weight
The BMR formula for women is as follows: BMR = 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)
As you see, only weight, height and age are used to calculate BMR. When you multiply your BMR by the activity factor, you get the number of calories required to maintain your weight. This is the number you need to deduct 500 calories from if you want to lose weight.
You can use our BMR Calculator to calculate not only your BMR, but the number of calories required to maintain your weight. This is a download link to the free 30-day version: http://www.actabit.com/download/bmr-calculator.exe
How many calories do I need?
Hi I am 24 years of age and 5ft 4. I weigh 7 1/2 stone - which I think is 107 pounds.
I am extremely active and work out every day for roughly an hour-2 hours. I would really like to know how many calories I should be intaking daily as I do not have a clue. And also could you recommend the types of food I should be eating?

I'm a 6'3" male, 158 lbs, and i have been losing 1-2 lbs. a week on a 1000 calorie diet doing moderate exercise. i eat whenever i feel hungry, just a normal serving size of something. from what i can tell i experience no common side-affects of starvation, i was just wondering if that amount of calories is too low?
Not seeing results
I'm 29 5'6 and 260 lbs I have a thyroid problem but its been managed for years. I am now on a 1200 a day calorie intake and I have been doing this for 2 weeks now and Walking for 30 min each day on-top of my regular busy schedule. I have not seen one pound lost. Please tell me there is light at the end of this tunnel I'm desperate.
BMR numbers...quick question
I am a 38 year old woman that is 5/10 inches and weigh 177 pounds. I have a diet now of 1250-1300 calories a day but am watching my intake of all vitamins from spinach, lentils, fish, etc...
My BMR is 1575 and I exercise 3 times a week. To lose weight. Is my caloric intake now of 1300 calories good? You mention 1000 calories less than your BMR. Is that your BMR needed to sustain yourself or to maintain your weight? Not sure which number you mean.
thanks!
Lisa
re: BMR numbers...quick question
BMR is the number of calories required to sustain life in the body, not to maintain your weight. If you exercise 3 times a week, you need about 2100 calories to maintain your weight.
> You mention 1000 calories less than your BMR.
No more than 1000 calories. Weight loss should not be rapid. It is usually recommended to create a calorie deficit of 500 calories through a combination of diet and exercise.
Do i need help?
Hi I'm 5ft 8inch and weight 137 pounds and I'm 15 ...even though I have a normal BMI and everyone tells me I look okay 137 pounds just sounds disgusting and I don't think I look okay...I've recently lost about 20 pounds and want to lose more. I am eating but I don't want to, it makes me feel bad. What do i do? I don't want to tell my parents....I have mixed feelings: I don't want to stop but then everyone keeps telling me what I'm doing is bad and I look like a stick when I don't even see what I'm doing is not like I'm sick or anything. I'm just confused and need advice?
Thanx
RE: Do I need help
Do not worry about your weight; it is within the healthy range. And you should not feel bad about eating.
What you need to do is improve your shape, not lose weight. You will get more benefits from a supervised exercise programme than from restricting your food. And you will feel much better about yourself.
This is a graph for your BMI:

I am 5'8,14,and 138 pounds. How many calories should I have to eat to lose 3 pounds a week. I have struggled with anorexia and bulimia for about one year. I want to put that behind me and lose weight a healthy way and maintain my weight, instead of yo-yo dieting. Please give me help on the subject. I would really appreciate it.
thanks
BMR Calculator
I am a dietetics major, and there is a formula I learned for ideal body weight for women which is if your 5 ft tall, you should weigh 100 lbs. For every inch you are above that, you add 5 more pounds.
So, if for example, you are 5'8" then it would be 100 lbs + 5 x 8= 140lbs +/- 5 lbs. I know that this is a good estimate of where women should fall in weight range because it is a HEALTHY BMI and WEIGHT for that person.
I was hospitalized for 5 weeks for anorexia, I had become 92 lbs at 5'4". I also loved watching the numbers go down on the scale and then I became afraid to gain the weight back. I had rationalized that I only needed about 600-800 calories a day, and that is ridiculous now that I look back on my experience. Even when I was inpatient and they made me start eating 1200 calories a day -TO START, I didn't gain any weight, actually I still lost weight- in the first two weeks so my calories had to keep getting increased.
If you are in a healthy weight range, do not think you are a special case who needs less food than most, and please don't let it get out of hand. Some of the inquiries on this page have worried me so greatly, please PLEASE I know how you feel, I've been there and back again. Please girls don't do this to yourselves.
Still want tip?
Eat a variety of foods including fruit and veg. Eat until full, but not stuffed. Cut down on soda and chocolate, but don't avoid them. They have nutrients in them. Hope this helped.
too fat
Hi, I have several conditions, like gall bladder disease, ulcers, and ibs. I have a hard time trying to keep a good diet, because all of these conflict. I have lost 40 pounds about 8 years ago...and have put back them on mostly. I would like to know how to get back to 125 pounds, without starving myself, and keeping in mind, my restrictions. Thanks Oh and i have started working out consistently again 4-5 days a week. Another question, can sodium have an impact on your weight?
RE
Only your doctor and dietitian can give you a specific diet regime to follow.
is it bad?
I'm not necessarily trying to loose weight, but keep in shape. I'm 16, 5'3'' and weigh 115lbs. I'm a swimmer and swim vigorously two hours a day. My BMR is 1357 and to keep my current weight it is about 1865. I only consume about 1350-1400 calories a day. I'm not trying to diet, I'm just not hungry. It seems healthy enough for me, but with swimming so much I'm not sure if I should be eating more.
is it bad?
The general recommendation for the girls of your age is about 2000 calories and for the boys - about 2200-2400 calories. However, caloric requirements vary highly from individual to individual. Some people are just more calorie efficient than others. Please note that your body needs not only calories but minerals and vitamins. You should check with your dietitian to make sure you get enough nutrients.
Also, take a look at the nutritional recommendations for teens.

RE: weight loss
working out
I'm 5'7'' 160 lbs. I go to the gym four or five days a week, and I do about 40 minutes of walking/elliptical training along with three days a week of circuit weight training. My BMI is around 1500 and I never eat more than 1500 calories a day. With all this exercising should I be eating more calories?
undereating
hi I am 16 5''2 and 82 lbs. I have been eating around 700-900 calories lately and lost 10 lb since school started. I am very worried about my health because I often feel cold, tired etc. However, I only ate when I'm hungry and stopped when I'm full. Could it be that my body has a very low metabolism? because I feel full after all my meals and they make me full for at least 4-5 hours.
Should I up my calorie intake? if so, to how much is the absolute minimum I can have? if so, am i going to gain weight?
RE: undereating
You should see a healthcare provider for an assessment to determine possible causes of underweight.

I am a 27 yr. old woman - i am 5' 5" and currently weigh 147 lbs. I am trying to lose 20 more lbs. I currently work out 5-6 times a week on an elliptical for 30-60 minutes at a time and I do yoga 3 times a week for a half hour at time. I was wondering how many calories a day I should be consuming. I have been striving for 1200 cal. a day, but now that I am working out more, I feel I need to eat more. I usually burn between 350-750 a day, depending on activity. I don't want to eat too much, but am afraid I am not eating enough.
calorie need
To calculate your daily calorie need, download BMR Calculator and enter your gender, height, weight and activity level. Then deduct 500 calories from your daily calorie need to find out how many calories you need a day if you want to lose a pound a week.
Caloric intake
I am 53, 62" and weigh 175. I was 186 but went on a 1200 calorie diet and lost the 11. I work out for 2.5 hrs 3 times per week. 30 minute stretch, 30 minute treadmill @3.2mph on a 2.5 incline. I also do the remainder in weights. I do upper and lower body on the same day due to my schedule. Should I increase my calories per day from 1200? Or am I ok with that?
Please help me. I am getting so confused.

still gaining weight
I'm female, 19 years old, 127ish lbs (my scale is broken). I calculated my bmr to be about 1402 calories per day without factoring in activity. I do some light exercise in my dorm to add to my walking all over campus. A month or so ago I noticed that I was putting on weight so I started reducing my calorie intake to a max of around 1200 per day. My activity level has not changed very much and I have been avoiding much snacking unless I know exactly what a serving is and what I am getting from it and I only drink water with occasional milk for calcium, but I am still noticing weight gain. I have hypothyroidism and it used to cause me metabolic problems. I was overwight until I went on medication, but now my thyroid levels are in check, and I thought my metabolism was too. Could there be some underlying issue here or am I doing something wrong?
Very Heavy
Well, I'm a thirteen year old girl; who gets exercise daily, eats fairly healthily, and is quite active. My calorie intake ranges from 1400-2000 from day to day. About two years ago, I weighed in at close to 130 lbs, and I was a tub. Then, through healthy eating, I went down to 121 lbs. In the Summer of '07, I went down to 117-120 lbs. But now, I've gained a lot, and I am back up to 127 lbs. I just don't get it. One of my friends never stops eating and she weighs 113 lbs, and she's BIGGER than me! Then, my other friend is way bigger than me and she weighs 119! I'm very confused. Why do I weigh so much? My parents say it's because I have a lot of muscle on my arms and legs, which could be true because I beat all the other girls my age in arm wrestling. But does having a lot of muscles really make your weight go up THAT much?
Losing wieght questions
Hello I am 25 year old female height 5'5 and weight about 149. What is my BMI? What should i do to lose weight faster? I attend a gym 5 days a week!
Is it possible that I should have such a low metabolism?
I'm 16 and 5"2. On a 1500 calorie-diet, it seems I have been able to gain 7lbs, with my weight increasing from 123lbs to 130lbs. If anything, my calorie intake has decreased and exercise rate increased (I run 5-10km 3-4 times per week and do about 1 hour of walking per day). According to many tables, I'm actually overweight. What on earth can be wrong with me?
N.B My scales measure body fat and the gain is not in muscle mass.
i have been having roughly
i have been having roughly 400 calories a day for a week.
i ate 120 calories today, and really want to lose weight!
this isn't anorexic state, is it?
Your diet is too low in calories
You will ruin your health if you continue your 400-calorie a day diet. A very low-calorie diet must always be supervised by a doctor.
