HI, I'm a 17 year old female

HI, I'm a 17 year old female I'm 5'5 and weigh between 108 and 110. I work out 5 to 6 days a week for about an hour and a half..my body doesn't really look thin though. I think it's just because of my muscle mass.but I would like to know how many calories a day I need to eat in order to keep that same weight.my family owns a vitamin store so I take multivitamins.CLA.fish oil, zinc and lots of protein.i also want to know if it would be healthy for me to drop about 3 pounds?

I am afraid for my friends life.

She is 17 years old, 5'6.5", I can only guess that she weighs somewhere from 115 lbs to 110 lbs or less. She is athletic and only gets around 4-6 hours of sleep a night. She works out almost constantly, trying to lose weight that she can't afford to lose. She says that she is not anorexic but she avoids eating as much as possible, and she will not tell me how much she weighs unti she loses 10 lbs. Whenever something goes wrong she thinks it is her fault, and cuts. When one of her friends was caught, she stopped cutting her wrists and started cutting her thighs. Last month, she and her brother were pulled over and he was given a $265 ticket, she gave her brother $80 to help pay for it, and cut her hips 265 times. Just this past week, she got into a fight with her boyfriend over a poem she wrote, and she cut again. The next night her mom told her that she had received an email from a teacher saying that she and her boyfriend needed to stop groping in the hall or they could be expelled, and her mother gave a speech. After the speech, my friend went to her room and cut some more. After talking with her for 3 years, I have learned that she despises herself because she believes that she is a failure, and that she believes that she is bigger than a blue whale; she has little to no self-confidence, and she doubts herself about everything; when she was 7 her mother asked her something along the lines of "If your father and I were to spend a lot of money on your face, would you prefer it be your nose or your teeth?" and other not so pleasant things for a young girl to be asked; she seems to want to fade into nothing; and that against all odds, she trusts me about most things. I tried to get her to eat more and relax more while I was still living near her, and now that distance has put a stop to all in-person attempts, I have tried everything that I can think of from this distance. Please give me some advice, I don't know what to do or say anymore.

i am an anorexic

I am 15 turning 16 at the beginning of feb and in the tenth grade, my height is about 5'5 and I usually weigh between 110-115 as a result of my anorexia I have anemia, low blood pressure, and have become less socially active at school. I think my anorexia started the summer before grade 9, at first my weight was 135. I read a lot about my condition online. I never count calories, just about the only exercise I get is from walking because I'm lazy. I usually don't eat any food until about dinner time, I eat more during the weekend and less during the week, I drink at least a cup of water and a cup of milk a day and I always drink Dr.Pepper. I try to eat foods that will help replace the vitamins, nutrition, calcium, protein, fiber, iron (etc.) that my body needs to survive. I think I have this under control. Is this healthy?

I'm a Bulimic

Hi, I'm a bulimic. I never thought I was because I didn't think I was thin enough to have an eating disorder. But I'm 17 years old and it started about 2 years ago right before my 9th grade year. I got myself down to 110 by purging restricting and exercising. But I was sent to treatment twice and am on the verge of going again. I not weigh 130, I'm 5'8" and at a healthy weight (which I still feel is nasty) My advice is stop what you are doing right now. This isn't helping us. It's making us gain weight in the long run. No vitamins can help you replenish what your missing out on because the water soluble vitamins get washed away with your urine and the fat soluble vitamins need to be eaten WITH A FAT to be absorbed. There is no such thing as having control over an eating disorder. Believe me you don't want to be put into a hospital.

i am no doctor,but i am a

i am no doctor, but i am a health teacher and former coach. you need to eat! you don't have to over indulge, but at your age you need good wholesome food.you need vitamins and minerals to make your bones strong. not eating right can have an effect on yor teeth, skin, bones, finger nails, etc. i am probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but , you need to eat!you need to drink at least 8-12 ounces of milk a day. and 6-8 8oz glasses of water. protien. chicken breast, lean beef, pork chops. potatoes, wheat bread, vegatables. green beans, peas, broccoli, any kind of vegatable really. but please eat.also, get you a good one a day vitamin. you need to make sure you get the vitamins your body needs. if you need someone to talk to, i am sure your school has a counselor.i would also be willing to listen to you. good luck!

Okay so Im 15, and I wen from 130 at 5'6 to 110 when i reached 110 i lost my period. i got up to 115 and stayed a tthat weight for about 10 months with out a period. 3 months ago i went to the doctor and they said to go to 125- 130 and it will return. It worked! Although 116 isnt too skinny, it probably is not healthy for your body. Everyones body is different and some need more body fat to have a baby. When you lose your period from rapid weight loss your body preserved the eggs.

Dont worry too much just gain 10 lb and keep that weight for 2 months and im sure youll get your period back!
workked for me

RE: Weight

116-130 pounds is considered a healthy weight for your height. 110 pounds may be a little bit low. You should definitely see your doctor because excessive exercise and dieting are most likely not the cause of missing periods for 9 months. Apart from pregnancy, the most common cause is hormonal imbalance.

weightloss.

Hello, i am a 16year old female im 5'8 and i weigh 185, i went from 198-185 but i don't seem to be moving for the past few weeks :(!!!!
i was wondering how many calories should i eat per day to lose 2-3 lbs/week? i exercise daily for 1hr.

hi

hi

Lately I've only been eating around 1300 calories a day and burning 800.

I know how unhealthy this is.

My BMR is 1300 so does this mean I have to eat 2100 calories to maintain my weight? (1300 + 800)

How should I increase if this is the case? I've gone from 7st 9lbs or 107lbs to 97lbs or 6st 13lbs since the begging of July.

Will i gain more weight than before?

Also if it helps I'm a 16yr old girl and am the weight mentioned above and 5ft 2 inches

I am an eighteen year old

I am an eighteen year old female, I'm 5'0 inches and 116 pounds but I want to be 100 lbs and I would like to get to that weight in 55 days....and I would like to know if that is unhealthy for me to do that? or to even be 100 lbs being 5'0 and an eighteen year old. Please answer my question, thank you :)

Me too

I'm in the exact same situation as you... I'm 16, 114 lbs and 5ft half inch.

im anorexic

hi, im 15 years old and i weigh 110 lb, with the height of 5' 2.20, so my bmi is 20. my weight was 83.7 lb a year ago (bmi of 16). i was forest in to a hospital and fed. it was my nightmare. so now i kinda know about thees things...so, if you have questions...

Starving Runner

I'm a 5'4" girl, 145 lbs, and I have been losing 2 or 3 lbs. a week on an 1400 calorie diet and running about 5 days a week. I want to lose weight quickly, but I don't want to starve. I eat whole grains and lots of protein, not much fat and I feel like I'm starving most of the time. Should I be eating more because of the running?

Please don't do that!

Eat more than that! If you're feeling hungry all the time, your body will go into starvation mode and you will gain weight. Also, if you want to lose weight, I personally know a friend who actually lost 5 pounds on the Special K diet. Try it. I weigh the same and I'm 2 inches shorter.. so I know how you feel.

You should not starve

You should not starve yourself. Try to increase your calorie intake to 1800 calories a day. It may slow down your weight loss at first, but, if you continue running, you will lose weight.

metabolic disorder

I was never overweight and had a good physic...but after completing my college last year i suddenly gained about 8 kgs in just 7 months and seems like i am still growing fat. I am exactly 6 feet and weighing 82 kgs now.Is is normal? I never changed my diet and eating habits...can it be a metabolic disorder?

Weight #2

Oh, and by the way, I lost 6 lbs by eating less and exercising more at school, which affected my mile run score by almost a minute! (I used to be 84, then I went down to 78 while growing to 4 ft 11, then I gained 2 lbs and grew to 5 ft.)

Weight

I'm practically 5 ft and 84 lbs...before I was 80 but I started gaining 2 lbs at a time...but I HAVE been drinking a lot of water, like 4 cups, and that's when the numbers went up on the scale. However, I'm still the same skinny girl with a body mass of 15.7 or something like that. I swear, I haven't gotten any fatter. By the way, muscle weighs more than fat. There's a girl at my school that's really thin; she doesn't eat much, but she doesn't exercise! And we're only 5 pounds apart. One of my friends is 40 lbs more than me, and only 2 in. taller, but she's in really good shape; probably because most of it is muscle. I can run a mile in like 8 min. and 15 sec. :( I guess I kind of want to lose weight so I can look like some of my other friends, though.

weight loss

Female 180 lbs 5.5in.
Stair climb 4 times a day 10 times each session.
Consume 1300 calories a day (calories counted).
Can't seem to shift my weight at all.
Drink about 60 oz. of water a day.
Any suggestions?

very important

how do we do when we are asked to consider the effect of age on BMR
a- an infant who weighs 20 pounds has a BMR of 500 kcal/day
b- an adult who weighs 170 pounds has a BMR OF ABOUT 1500
C- based on body weight, who has the faster BMR

and also D- how do we compute the energy needs for a woman, age 20 who is 5 feet inches tall weighs 130 pound and is lightly active

E- discover what weight is needed to achieve a desired BMI
thank you :)

Energy needs for a woman

For the estimation of basal metabolic rate in adults, you can use the Harris-Benedict Formula, which is as follows for women: BMR = 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)

If you are lightly active, multiply your BMR by 1.375 and you will get the number of calories required to maintain your current weight. This may or may not be your recommended calorie intake depending on your goal. If your goal is to lose weight, you may want to deduct 500 calories to create a calorie deficit.

I'm not exactly sure about my metabolic rate but i estimate it to be approximately 1400 till 1600. My height is 153cm, or 60.23 inches. I eat healthily, i consume large amounts of rice, vegetables, meat, and fruits. I snack every few hours and have light excercise too but why can't I put on weight? I hope that you can advise me how to gain weight instead and what types of food i should consume. Now i am trying to put on 1kg every month, and i sometimes try to force myself to eat even when i am filled. Can you please help me out?

weight loss

my eight year old daughter weighs 92 lbs she is 50 inches tall how much fat and calories should she have each day . thank you

hi

hi, i'm 17 years old, and 5'1" i weigh 170 pounds, and i'm looking for a way to get down to 110 pounds in 6 months. if you can help me i'k be very appreciative

hey firstly you need to

hey firstly you need to indicate if u're female or male.
a female and a male calorie expenditure differs a lot.
let me give you a rough idea on how ideally and healthily losing weight actually comes about.

First:
-go online and calculate your today daily energy expenditure and basal metabolic rate in short TDEE and BMR respectively.
-TDEE measures ur maximum calorie intake daily to maintain ur weight, and BMR is the amount of calorie your body needs to survive when ure in a coma.
-you will need certain information like your height, weight, age and your daily activity level e.g if ure sedentary, lightly exercising, etc.

note: i suggest you use 2 to 3 calculators instead of just one to get the average for a better gauge.

Secondly:
-weight loss actually occurs when you have a calorie deficit.
-in order to lose a pound you'll need to have a calorie deficit of 3500kcal.
-we'll spread this calorie deficit out into a week:
3500kcal/7=500kcal deficit daily.
-so simply subtracting 500 from your calculated TDEE value, in a week of calorie restriction you will definitely lose a pound.

note: it is recommended to go into a deficit of 500 to 1000 and not anything more than 1000 as u'll be putting ur health at risk.

Thirdly:
-limit your fat intake to 20% of your total calorie intake and your saturated fat amount will be half of what your fat intake will be.
-protein should be approximately 40% and carbs will take up the rest of your calorie intake.

Lastly:
-weigh yourself on a weekly basis before breakfast, and note it down.
-keep a diet diary for tracking purposes.

Meal option:
-AVOID FAST FOOD but..
i will really recommend subway as a choice as it has ranges of healthy subs with 6g of fats or less and relatively low in calories, example:
1.veggie delight
2.roast beef
3.turkey breast
4.ham
5.subway club, etc
- when ordering your sandwich, leave out the cheese and condiments and include all vegetables.

-if ure eating out, choose for grilled, boiled, stewed dishes instead of pan-fried or deep fried.
-among all raw fishes, tuna has the least calorie.
-salmon is a very good form of fish intake for a diet.
-avoid rice, choose noodles instead like bee hoon or grass noodle from Chinese restaurants.
- when ordering salad, ask for no dressing, or ask it on a side.
- you can indulge in steak, chicken chop, anything of your fave once in a while,
but remember to ask for no sauce or sauce on the side. note: The sauce is drench in calories.
- drink LOTS of water, and eat ALOT of fruits to keep your body hydrated.

alright, thats about it. all the best for your weight loss routine(:

Belly fat

Hi,I am 13 years old.I am 5`5 and a half,im not overweight or to skinny. The problem is i have that belly fat,and i want to lose that fat to form abs.Can you help me?

dont worry just keep a stedy

dont worry just keep a stedy health diet and do sport . i used to be like you but now iv got no belly fat

i have the same problem, but

i have the same problem, but i'm only about 5'. i get a bit of excercize and don't eat a lot of junk food.

am i underweight

i have checked all sorts of sites and they say i dont weigh enough. im almost 15, female, 5ft. 8in. and 145 lbs. but then again im on the basketball team at school so 6 days a week i have two hour practices. is that healthy?

wait... I'm 5'8 also and I

wait... I'm 5'8 also and I weigh 110, and I'm counting calories. Is that like unhealthy?

Yes

If your 5'8 and 110 you should NOT be counting calories! If anything you should try to gain a few pounds

How can I lose weight without being overly tired

Hi i'm 13 years old, 5 foot 2 and a half and weigh usually around 125 to 130 pounds, I do Karate 3-4 times a week and run or ride the electrical bike once or twice for an Hour. I want to lose weight very sloly like a pound a week so I can be at less of a risk for type 2 diabetes and stuff. I also want to be a knockout(hottie) in Highschool, but I'm not good at staying on a healthy eating plan for a long period of time, I'm not sure how much to eat to get down to my goal weight(115-110) and how to maintain that weight as I get older so can you help me?!? Please...

YOU ARE 13. Please wait

YOU ARE 13.
Please wait until you are done with puberty before you think about dieting.
One to two pounds a week is the recommended weight loss, you aren't losing weight slowing and are vastly uneducated about diabetes.

Also, Bec sounds like an anorexic.

HEY im bec with some suggestions

ok, i am sort of going through the same thing so i have been looking at simple diets aswell... and, there are a few easy ones to go through to look healthier and it will be easy to maintain...
1. eat quite a large beaky... not alot, and not much fattening or oily stuff.
2. eat a bigger lunch than breaky but still remember not to OVERFEED yourself.
3. eat a small dinner, not too small that you starve, just enough to get youthrough the night for breakfast!

thats 1 which i find really useful... i was losing 2 kilos a week... pretty impressive... this is easy to maintain because it will make your stumach smaler so it will be fuller for longer!!!

next,
1. do not eat ALOT of meat... meat is chunky and people tend to eat it quickly so it doesnt fill them up so they eat more and more and it all adds up...

this is a good one although... might be a little harder.. but still, dont become a vegitarian or not eat meat at all... still keep the balance there.

another one is...
1. eat vegie soup or spinach regularly as it has barely any fat, sugar or carbs and it has the right supplements you need in your body to lose weight.

hard, but SO effective!!

1. resist the temptation of SNACKING.... from now on, SNACKING is your worst enemy!!
when you reallly think about it, i reckon fruit even tastes better than chocolates, there are 3 types of chocolate... dark, milk and white... there are so many fruits you couldnt write them all on 1 piece of paper. there is such a variety of fruit as there are 3 types of chocolate... dont even think of snacking

this is difficult if you are one of those people who just get bored... go to the pantry and grab a chocky to nibble on... that one tasted so good, you just need another one!!!!

NO

naughty, think to yourself... 'every nibble i take puts on a pound... really convince yourself that so when you go to the pantry or fridge, you pick up the banana or apple infront of you other than taking the bar of turkish delight which is STARING right at you.

believe that you have the strength.

another one,

1. DONT DRINK SOFT DRINK... all it is is, sugar, colouring which is also colouring and gas... which can get ugly!!! why put yourself through a strong taste of sweetness or even bitterness to get fat?? i dont think so...
2. push yourself over to thetap with a glass in your hand... fill it with water and add a slice of lemon or lime into it. you may think... What will that do??
the answer: lemon and lime acids burn some of the fat in your digestive system.so your probably standing at the tap with a glass of water and you think, 1 glass wont make a difference, i cant be bothered to (go to the corner store for a batch of lemons/ ask the neighbour for a lemon/go to the fridge for one/ ask mum/ ask dad...) the facts are... YES, every glass counts because if you had 19 glasses with lemon instead of 20... it will make the difference, everything adds up!!!
also, walking (to the shops for a lemon/ next door for a lemon/ going to the fridge for a lemon...) is doing so much more excersize for your body which leads me onto my last point...

excersise:
sitting down watching is probably the worst thing you can do when you are bored... being bored is having nothing to do...people fill their time in with watching TV because it's EASY!! dont go for lazy easy, go for a walk round the block, how hard can it be... be motivated. you would probably be sitting down thinking to yourself... but i have to get chaged... and go all the way downstairs to leave the house... all those things are good for you so why not do them... even if its to the corner of the street and back, you'll probably find that once you are there, you will want to go further.

you can make a time schedual and organise a time to go for a walk and you can set yourself 2 hrs MAX watching tv and on your computer if it isnt for work... if you have to do work on your computer... do it as early as possible so you can do other fun things later and not worry bout your 'unfinished' work!!!

good luck, i hope you do well!!!!
xoxo

Hi I'm an 18 year old girl who is 5'4 and weighs 6 stone 6 approx. I can't find out what my bmr is - i work aout about twice a week on top of moderate activities and consume about 1000cals a day. Is this a normal amount?

warning

You may not be getting all the nutrients your body needs to be healthy. I strongly recommend that you consult your doctor as a 1000-cal diet can be dangerous to your health.

you should be getting about

you should be getting about 2,000 calories a day, but you might still be healthy with the 1,000 calorie diet if you are not that hungry, but if you are, feel free to eat more.

Lose weight and BMR decreases

I am a man,30 years old,171cm,63.5kg.My BMR is 1465.I taking lose weight program.May I know why when we lose weight, our BMR will reduce?

BMR and weight

The amount of calories required to sustain life in your body each day (BMR) depends on your weight. So when you lose weight, your BMR gets lower. BMR FAQ includes a formula used to calculate BMR.

I have question.. i had my

I have question.. i had my metabolism rate tested the result was 2880... what does this mean???

metabolism rate

This depends on how it was tested. In general, it means how many calories your body burns at rest.

I am a 34 year old male that

I am a 34 year old male that was a finalist in 2 UK modelling competitions at 18 and was 11 stone (11*14 pounds). When I was 24 I noticed I was starting to look relatively bad as my weight crept up to 12.5 stone. I started to run 10 miles each morning to bring it back to 11. In 1997 I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and the medication put my weight up to 19 stones for which it resided for 10 years during which time I sadly did not have one girlfriend largely due to being obese. A change in medication in 2005 took my weight down to 14 and I illegally bought a drug called Topamax off the internet which took me back to 12.5. Change in psychiatric medication did not work so back to 17 stone again. Then another change recently plus Orlistat (Xenical) has brought my weight down to 14.5 stone. I ideally would like to be 11 stone (154 lbs)but would satisfy at 12.5 again. Stress had turned me to drinking 5 cans of Bud a night, but despite giving it up (a reduction of 1250 calories a day I have only lost 1 mesely pound this week and seeing as I recently tried Topamax again and it did not work I am getting extremely paranoid due to my mental health problems E.G. curse on me etc.
Surely if I cut out 1250 calories a day for 6 days a week I should expect a weight loss of more than a pound a week because the way I see it this wholeweight gain thing is a nightmare and obesity is one of the most cruel dehabilitating conditions there is. Your web site and all posts are fascinating. I hope that you do not mind me joining in and I hope that you will not mind being of some help to me.

Just a tip.

I am currently taking a nutrition/herbalist course as my collage, and one of the biggest things I study is diet and lifestyle. I know it seems hard just losing one pound, but really that is the healthiest way to do it. The big ads for things that garentee you losing five or more pounds a week, are just fads that help you lose water weight, which will always come right back as soon as you stop dieting. I would highly caution against all weight loss pills. What they don't tell you about them is much more dangerous than losing weight slooowlyyy without them. They cause many negative side affects and many can have negative reactions with medication that you are taking and can actually worsen diseases.
What kind of Bipolar Disorder were you diagnosed with? There are four different kinds, Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymic Disorder, or Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.
Question, were you told before you started taking the medication that it would cause weight gain? Did they admonish you to keep exercising and to watch your diet? This is one of the biggest mistakes I think that doctors make regarding bipolar disorder. The medication WILL cause weight gain for many people, but if advice is given and received on exercising and dieting, the problem can be maintained, and actually REVERSED if done thoroughly and diligently.
How were your eating habits during that time? I know that people who struggle with mood swings often eat when they are not hungry as a "comfort measure" or a time filler.
As far as actually losing weight goes:
Great job in cutting out the beer, that's a big step.
Did you stop exercising after you were diagnosed? Although you may not feel capable to do very "stressful" exercising, (such as running ten miles:-)there are still a GREAT DEAL of exercises you can do!
I would also ask how your diet is now. I'm not asking you to dive into vegetarianism, but I do ask you to watch quantity, and type.
Don't eat out a lot, drink more water and less caffeinated drinks, fix smaller servings, try to eat one (just one) salad a day instead of a regular meal. I find eating a salad at supper is most helpful because I go to bed soon after and am better able to ignore "hunger cravings". Another BIG thing is to eat SLOWLY, for EVERYTHING you eat. Take time to chew your food. You know why? It's because it takes your food a certain amount of time to reach and fill your stomach, so if your cramming food quickly, by the time you start feeling full, you still have a bunch of food coming, thus giving you a lot you don't need. A good practice to begin with is to chew ten seconds, swallow, and wait ten seconds before you take another bite.
I could write so much more, I want you help you so much! But time hinders me. I hope this helps!

i have been having roughly 400 calories a day for a week.
i ate 120 calories today, and really want to lose weight!
this isn't anorexic state, is it?

If you are eating only 400

If you are eating only 400 calories per day you are ruining your metabolism. Very little weight loss will be from fat. Your body will be in "starvation" mode and will resist burning fat and instead burn muscle etc. for energy. Since a calorie is a measurement of energy you need enough to support bodily functions. Find out your BMR (there are many calculators online) and that will tell you how many calories you need just to support your bodies needs (at rest). You should not go below 10-15% less than your BMR without a Physicians permission if you want to lose fat and not muscle. Exercise and extra activity during the day will help you burn more calories. It's better to eat a little more and burn it of with exercise than to eat so much less than your body needs to be healthy. Extremes never give the best results and you will often gain much of the weight back quickly (rebound effect) if you don't take it a little bit more slowly. Hope this helps!

Your diet is too low in calories

You will ruin your health if you continue your 400-calorie a day diet. A very low-calorie diet must always be supervised by a doctor.

Is it possible that I should have such a low metabolism?

I'm 16 and 5"2. On a 1500 calorie-diet, it seems I have been able to gain 7lbs, with my weight increasing from 123lbs to 130lbs. If anything, my calorie intake has decreased and exercise rate increased (I run 5-10km 3-4 times per week and do about 1 hour of walking per day). According to many tables, I'm actually overweight. What on earth can be wrong with me?
N.B My scales measure body fat and the gain is not in muscle mass.

Losing wieght questions

Hello I am 25 year old female height 5'5 and weight about 149. What is my BMI? What should i do to lose weight faster? I attend a gym 5 days a week!

Very Heavy

Well, I'm a thirteen year old girl; who gets exercise daily, eats fairly healthily, and is quite active. My calorie intake ranges from 1400-2000 from day to day. About two years ago, I weighed in at close to 130 lbs, and I was a tub. Then, through healthy eating, I went down to 121 lbs. In the Summer of '07, I went down to 117-120 lbs. But now, I've gained a lot, and I am back up to 127 lbs. I just don't get it. One of my friends never stops eating and she weighs 113 lbs, and she's BIGGER than me! Then, my other friend is way bigger than me and she weighs 119! I'm very confused. Why do I weigh so much? My parents say it's because I have a lot of muscle on my arms and legs, which could be true because I beat all the other girls my age in arm wrestling. But does having a lot of muscles really make your weight go up THAT much?

muscle mass

your weight could be due to muscle, as muscle weighs more than fat. Also, you may be more developed than her, which is also a contributing factor

still gaining weight

I'm female, 19 years old, 127ish lbs (my scale is broken). I calculated my bmr to be about 1402 calories per day without factoring in activity. I do some light exercise in my dorm to add to my walking all over campus. A month or so ago I noticed that I was putting on weight so I started reducing my calorie intake to a max of around 1200 per day. My activity level has not changed very much and I have been avoiding much snacking unless I know exactly what a serving is and what I am getting from it and I only drink water with occasional milk for calcium, but I am still noticing weight gain. I have hypothyroidism and it used to cause me metabolic problems. I was overwight until I went on medication, but now my thyroid levels are in check, and I thought my metabolism was too. Could there be some underlying issue here or am I doing something wrong?

Caloric intake

I am 53, 62" and weigh 175. I was 186 but went on a 1200 calorie diet and lost the 11. I work out for 2.5 hrs 3 times per week. 30 minute stretch, 30 minute treadmill @3.2mph on a 2.5 incline. I also do the remainder in weights. I do upper and lower body on the same day due to my schedule. Should I increase my calories per day from 1200? Or am I ok with that?
Please help me. I am getting so confused.

I am a 27 yr. old woman - i am 5' 5" and currently weigh 147 lbs. I am trying to lose 20 more lbs. I currently work out 5-6 times a week on an elliptical for 30-60 minutes at a time and I do yoga 3 times a week for a half hour at time. I was wondering how many calories a day I should be consuming. I have been striving for 1200 cal. a day, but now that I am working out more, I feel I need to eat more. I usually burn between 350-750 a day, depending on activity. I don't want to eat too much, but am afraid I am not eating enough.

calorie need

To calculate your daily calorie need, download BMR Calculator and enter your gender, height, weight and activity level. Then deduct 500 calories from your daily calorie need to find out how many calories you need a day if you want to lose a pound a week.

undereating

hi I am 16 5''2 and 82 lbs. I have been eating around 700-900 calories lately and lost 10 lb since school started. I am very worried about my health because I often feel cold, tired etc. However, I only ate when I'm hungry and stopped when I'm full. Could it be that my body has a very low metabolism? because I feel full after all my meals and they make me full for at least 4-5 hours.
Should I up my calorie intake? if so, to how much is the absolute minimum I can have? if so, am i going to gain weight?

RE: undereating

You should see a healthcare provider for an assessment to determine possible causes of underweight.

working out

I'm 5'7'' 160 lbs. I go to the gym four or five days a week, and I do about 40 minutes of walking/elliptical training along with three days a week of circuit weight training. My BMI is around 1500 and I never eat more than 1500 calories a day. With all this exercising should I be eating more calories?

weight loss

I am 45 years old i weighed in at weight watchers last week at 164.6 i am 5'1". i go to the gym 3 x per week , i do 30 min cardio treadmill which burns about 240 calories and i do the precor for 10 min burning about 80 calories, i do about 15min of ab workout. my scale says i lost 4 pounds this week my goal weight is 130lb. i drink a lot of water. i count the points on weight watchers which at this point i am allowed 22 but i usually only use 20 points. how many pounds could i consider losing a week at this rate? i was always about 130-135 i stopped working out and gained this weight. thanks christina

RE: weight loss

In general, to lose one pound a week, you have to create a deficit of 3500 calories a week (500 calories per day). As you see, we do not use Weight Watchers points, we use calories. I can't suppose how many pounds you could consider losing a week.

is it bad?

I'm not necessarily trying to loose weight, but keep in shape. I'm 16, 5'3'' and weigh 115lbs. I'm a swimmer and swim vigorously two hours a day. My BMR is 1357 and to keep my current weight it is about 1865. I only consume about 1350-1400 calories a day. I'm not trying to diet, I'm just not hungry. It seems healthy enough for me, but with swimming so much I'm not sure if I should be eating more.

is it bad?

The general recommendation for the girls of your age is about 2000 calories and for the boys - about 2200-2400 calories. However, caloric requirements vary highly from individual to individual. Some people are just more calorie efficient than others. Please note that your body needs not only calories but minerals and vitamins. You should check with your dietitian to make sure you get enough nutrients.

too fat

Hi, I have several conditions, like gall bladder disease, ulcers, and ibs. I have a hard time trying to keep a good diet, because all of these conflict. I have lost 40 pounds about 8 years ago...and have put back them on mostly. I would like to know how to get back to 125 pounds, without starving myself, and keeping in mind, my restrictions. Thanks Oh and i have started working out consistently again 4-5 days a week. Another question, can sodium have an impact on your weight?

RE

Only your doctor and dietitian can give you a specific diet regime to follow.

BMR Calculator

I am 5'8,14,and 138 pounds. How many calories should I have to eat to lose 3 pounds a week. I have struggled with anorexia and bulimia for about one year. I want to put that behind me and lose weight a healthy way and maintain my weight, instead of yo-yo dieting. Please give me help on the subject. I would really appreciate it.
thanks

Still want tip?

Eat a variety of foods including fruit and veg. Eat until full, but not stuffed. Cut down on soda and chocolate, but don't avoid them. They have nutrients in them. Hope this helped.

BMR Calculator

I am a dietetics major, and there is a formula I learned for ideal body weight for women which is if your 5 ft tall, you should weigh 100 lbs. For every inch you are above that, you add 5 more pounds.

So, if for example, you are 5'8" then it would be 100 lbs + 5 x 8= 140lbs +/- 5 lbs. I know that this is a good estimate of where women should fall in weight range because it is a HEALTHY BMI and WEIGHT for that person.

I was hospitalized for 5 weeks for anorexia, I had become 92 lbs at 5'4". I also loved watching the numbers go down on the scale and then I became afraid to gain the weight back. I had rationalized that I only needed about 600-800 calories a day, and that is ridiculous now that I look back on my experience. Even when I was inpatient and they made me start eating 1200 calories a day -TO START, I didn't gain any weight, actually I still lost weight- in the first two weeks so my calories had to keep getting increased.

If you are in a healthy weight range, do not think you are a special case who needs less food than most, and please don't let it get out of hand. Some of the inquiries on this page have worried me so greatly, please PLEASE I know how you feel, I've been there and back again. Please girls don't do this to yourselves.

Do i need help?

Hi I'm 5ft 8inch and weight 137 pounds and I'm 15 ...even though I have a normal BMI and everyone tells me I look okay 137 pounds just sounds disgusting and I don't think I look okay...I've recently lost about 20 pounds and want to lose more. I am eating but I don't want to, it makes me feel bad. What do i do? I don't want to tell my parents....I have mixed feelings: I don't want to stop but then everyone keeps telling me what I'm doing is bad and I look like a stick when I don't even see what I'm doing is not like I'm sick or anything. I'm just confused and need advice?

Thanx

RE: Do I need help

Hi,

Do not worry about your weight; it is within the healthy range. And you should not feel bad about eating.

What you need to do is improve your shape, not lose weight. You will get more benefits from a supervised exercise programme than from restricting your food. And you will feel much better about yourself.

This is a graph for your BMI:

BMR numbers...quick question

I am a 38 year old woman that is 5/10 inches and weigh 177 pounds. I have a diet now of 1250-1300 calories a day but am watching my intake of all vitamins from spinach, lentils, fish, etc...

My BMR is 1575 and I exercise 3 times a week. To lose weight. Is my caloric intake now of 1300 calories good? You mention 1000 calories less than your BMR. Is that your BMR needed to sustain yourself or to maintain your weight? Not sure which number you mean.

thanks!
Lisa

re: BMR numbers...quick question

BMR is the number of calories required to sustain life in the body, not to maintain your weight. If you exercise 3 times a week, you need about 2100 calories to maintain your weight.

> You mention 1000 calories less than your BMR.

No more than 1000 calories. Weight loss should not be rapid. It is usually recommended to create a calorie deficit of 500 calories through a combination of diet and exercise.

Not seeing results

I'm 29 5'6 and 260 lbs I have a thyroid problem but its been managed for years. I am now on a 1200 a day calorie intake and I have been doing this for 2 weeks now and Walking for 30 min each day on-top of my regular busy schedule. I have not seen one pound lost. Please tell me there is light at the end of this tunnel I'm desperate.

Re-not seeing results

Hi,
if you are not losing a single pound by only eating eating 1200 cals a day, i would try upping my calorie intake to say 1500 a day and then seeing how you go, then gradually drop to 1400 cals then 1300 etc.... if you dont eat enough calories a day your body thinks its starving and holds on to fat rather than burning it, so by giving your body those extra calories its telling your body that you are not going to starve and hopefully it should start to burn up that excess fat,
really hope that helps! and if you hit a point where you suddemly stp losing weight then up your calories again then cut back!

xx

BMR Calculator

I'm a 6'3" male, 158 lbs, and i have been losing 1-2 lbs. a week on a 1000 calorie diet doing moderate exercise. i eat whenever i feel hungry, just a normal serving size of something. from what i can tell i experience no common side-affects of starvation, i was just wondering if that amount of calories is too low?

Hello! For a man of your

Hello! For a man of your size your BMR is probably somewhere around 1,800 pounds. You will be having a hard time getting all the nutrients you need on just 1000 Calories. Congratulations on losing weight, but just eating 1,000 Calories is not a healthy amount for you.
According to the National Institute of Health, a healthy weight for someone 6'3" is between 160 - 192 lbs. So technically, you are under weight and should stop trying to lose it. I would up my diet to at least 1,800 Calories. (Although with your activity level you could eat up to a 2,300 Calorie diet)
Hope this help!
(And please keep yourself in a healthy weight range. It's too dangerous to play with.)

How many calories do I need?

Hi I am 24 years of age and 5ft 4. I weigh 7 1/2 stone - which I think is 107 pounds.

I am extremely active and work out every day for roughly an hour-2 hours. I would really like to know how many calories I should be intaking daily as I do not have a clue. And also could you recommend the types of food I should be eating?

Thank you

BMR and weight

Hi I am 25 y/o 5'4" female at 140 lbs (recent gain due to sedentary lifestyle). I've calculated my BMR at approx 1423/day. I'm trying to lose 15 lbs with diet and exercise. I do an hour on the elliptical with free weights 4 days a week. Should i add that activity level to my BMR? When I do that and my BMR increases then do i make up the deficit to lose weight by eating 500 less cal per day from that new number. Or do i keep my sedentary bmr calc at 1423/day and diet 250 cal and burn 250 cal in the gym to get 500 less cal per day which would put me at less than 1000 cal/day? I thought it was bad to go less than 1200.

RE: BMR and weight

The BMR formula for women is as follows: BMR = 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)

As you see, only weight, height and age are used to calculate BMR. When you multiply your BMR by the activity factor, you get the number of calories required to maintain your weight. This is the number you need to deduct 500 calories from if you want to lose weight.

You can use our BMR Calculator to calculate not only your BMR, but the number of calories required to maintain your weight. This is a download link to the free 30-day version: http://www.actabit.com/download/bmr-calculator.exe

quick question

Hi, I'm 16, 5'8, and 134 pounds. I recently lost 40 pounds. How much more should I lose? I ate 1200 calories to get there and now I've been eating around 1000 or less. I also have not had my period in about 4 months. I'm not sure what to do. I'd appreciate some advice please. I am also feeling addicted to the thrill of watching the numbers on the scale get lower. I know this is bad, please help.

RE: quick question

I understand that you want to see results as soon as possible, but please listen to me. It is a must to consult your doctor before you even think of reducing your calorie intake to 1000 calories.

The question is why you think you need to lose weight? Your current weight is considered normal for your height and age.

You tell that you have not had your period in about 4 months. You must go and see your doctor. On the Internet, you can find general information, but only your doctor can examine you. Do it now.

Low calorie intake

I have been intaking not more than 800 calories a day for 3 months now. I am currently 115 pounds, 5'6" and my BMR is 1500 calories. I have a very sedentary lifestyle and do not understand what's going on? If I need 1500 calories per day to maintain basic life activities ,how is my body getting all that?

Caution

Hi Sara. You are 115 pounds and are only consuming 800 calories a day. This is NOT a good thing, sweetheart. You body is NOT getting all that it needs. It is beginning to feed off of itself in order to get those denied calories. You may run into some serious medical issues if nutrition isn't changed drastically. Seizures, hair loss, amenorrhea (cessation of menstrual cycle), and more. Please, honey, talk to someone if you need help with your nutrition.

calorie intake

i am a 15yr old girl i weigh 10 stone and take in around 800 calories a day is this healthy

not healthy

Acording to weight watchers, your body needs at least 1200 calories a day or else it will start retaining all the calories you eat because it will "think" you are starving.

Can my BMR be LOWER?

I'm female, 5'8, currently 174 pounds. I get at least 60 minutes of moderate exercise per day, but have experienced significant weight gain (nearly 50 pounds) over the past 2-3 years with no change in eating habits or activity levels and no evidence of thyroid problems according to my doctor. If I eat anything close to the number of calories suggested by the BMR calculator, I gain weight rapidly.

In order to lose 1-2 pounds per week (which I've been doing for the past 5 weeks), I have to reduce calorie consumption to 1200 calories per day. My question is: is there any physiological way that a person's BMR could be lower than the formula says it is?

Can my BMR be LOWER?

A person's BMR can be lower than the formula says it is if, for example, the person has a metabolic disorder. You can get more information on metabolic diseases at Medline; however, please note that only your doctor can tell you if your metabolism is slower than average.

Most people have normal metabolism, and it is still difficult for them to lose weight. Calories add up quickly. You may forget about a snack or soda you had. Sometimes it is difficult to tell how much food a serving is and you can count calories from one serving when you actually had two servings.

You may think that you lose weight only on 1200-calorie diet when actually you eat more calories. If this is not the case and you eat only 1200 calories a day, I strongly recommend that you consult your dietitian before cutting your calories so dramatically. 1200-calorie diet is too low, and you may not get all the nutrients you need for health.

Thank you

Thank you for the information and the link.

I've been telling my doctor that I thought something more was going on -- even after the normal thyroid tests. I don't drink beverages with calories, and I count everything I eat to try to pack nutrition into that 1200 calorie limit.
I've finally managed to lose a total of 10 pounds this way (4 since my original post), but it really has been difficult. It feels like enough food -- the difficulty, as you said, is in ensuring nutrition.

It seemed strange that someone who never over-ate and always exercised would gain so much weight so suddenly; your response gives me a better idea of what to investigate. Thank you!

Another couple of suggestions ....

Your story sounds similar to mine.

If your hormone levels have changed and you are severely estrogen dominant ... Your body can't excrete the excess estrogen and stores it in fat cells. If you get the hormones in balance, weight starts to come off.

On another blog I read that thyroid functionality is often tested with measuring only 1 of 5 indicatators. Someone could be normal for indicator #1 but deficient on the other 4 indicators. If the doctor only tested #1 ... then he would report your thyroid had no issues.

Lastly, some of us will develop food sensitivities. Not food allergies ... which is an immediate reaction to a food. But a sensitivity where a reaction happens 18 to 36 hours after consumption. If an inordinate amount of energy is expended by the body to digest a food, then the energy is not being spent on burning up the fat on our body. A friend took celery & apples out of her diet ... cut back on exercise ... dropped 20 lbs. My nutritionist recently suggested I remove all REFINED carbs from my diet to see the impact. I'm eating a normal amount of carbs / day ... just not REFINED carbs.

Solutions are sometimes really simple. The tough part is the journey ... trying to find the magic formula that will work for you.

Good luck with your journey.

Your BMR depends on your weight

The minimum calorific requirement needed to sustain life in your body when you are resting (BMR) depends on your weight. The more you weight, the more calories you need to sustain your life. A 35 year old woman of 5'2" and 235 lb should not consume just 1200 calories. This will be unhealthy for her. She needs to calculate the number of calories required to maintain her weight. And then reduce her calories by at least 500 (per day), but not more than 1000 below her maintenance level. To calculate the number of calories required to maintain your weight, multiply your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) to your activity level. You do not have to do the math. BMR Calculator will do this for you and display your BMR and the number of calories required to maintain your weight.

bmr calculation

I am a lean, fairly muscular 57 year old, who according to the BMR calculator i use 1200+ calories. My client who is an obese 35 year old of 5'2" uses +1800. (She weighs 235 lb)To me this does not make sense. How can I get her to take in less calories if she sees she needs 1800 just to sleep. Please would you give me advice on how to use this BMR calculator. I feel it is useless unless you have the body fat content of the person as well. Is this correct?

I agree, there are far more

I agree, there are far more factors that go into calculating your caloric intake than just your BMR. I know there are many skeptics with the Atkins diet and being an obese person close to 50 years old and having been overweight my entire adult life in 14 months on the Atkins way of life plan am I no longer will be on the even considered overweight. An accomplished this by eating 1800s 2000 cal per day.
