Whole Wheat Bread vs. White Bread

Posted in
Bread

Whole wheat bread is often recommended as a healthier alternative to white bread. However, do you know what the difference is?

Wheat Bread Nutrition Facts

Both white and whole wheat bread are made from wheat flour. Wheat berries used to make flour have three parts: the bran, the germ and the endosperm. White flour uses only the endosperm, while whole-wheat flour uses all the three parts, each of which contains nutrients essential for your health.

Is Whole Wheat Bread Good For You?

Whole wheat bread is much higher in fiber than white bread. Fiber aids digestion and most people are aware of this. However, fiber's benefits go beyond healthy digestion. Fiber helps you feel full and makes it easier for you to control your weight. Moreover, it has many health benefits. For example, fiber reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Warning: People with wheat allergy, gluten intolerance, or colitis should eliminate wheat from the diet.

How can you tell if bread is whole wheat or not? Read labels. Look for "Whole Grain" or "Whole Wheat". If bread is labeled “Wheat Bread”, this does not mean that you get more nutrients. Bread can be made with a combination of white and whole-wheat flour. You do need to read the label.

grain bread

I am finding out after several months of trial and error, that I seem to have an intolerance to grain bread...be it the grains or diferent additives in it I don't know....but my theory is that the grains swell in my stomach and give me wind , which in turn produces jumpy heart rythym and flutters..HORRIBLE...
anyone else had this type of reaction from GRAIN bread?
someone told me that we humans do not to eat seeds in our diet and says "strictly for the birds"
What do the grains do for our health anyway?

Stomach problems from grain bread

Sounds like you have Gluten intolerance/ sensitivity. (Google it, & study up!) Many grains, not just wheat, contain gluten. We were raised to believe that whole wheat bread is good for us, but if you have a gluten sensitivity, you get cramping, stomach bloating, gas, & many more possible symptoms. You can develop gluten sensitivity as you age, even if you felt fine eating bread/ gluten products as a kid. You don't have to have celiac disease (A full-blown gluten allergy) to experience really stressful symptoms. The solution is to go on a gluten-free diet, & see if your symptoms go away. Here's a shocker: While ~ 1% of Americans & Europeans have Celiac disease, ~30% are now believed to have a gluten sensitivity! I wonder how many people diagnosed with "Irritable Bowel Syndrome" really are suffering from gluten sensitivity? Oh, you should also go to a health food store & get a recommendation for a good daily probiotic. Make sure it contains Bifidus (Bifidum-same thing), since we produce less bifidus as we age. Probiotics will help with digestion, & "Gut health". We now know that a strong immune system resides in the intestines. Probiotics will help you gain/ maintain gut health, especially if you have EVER been on antibiotics. (Because antibiotics kill the good gut bacteria along with the bad). Good Luck!

Asthma-irritating preservative

My husband has a horrible asthma and allergic reaction to a preservative many bread companies use in the USA. (Pepperidge Farm is the only major brand we have found that does NOT use this preservative so that he can eat it). When we looked it up, (the name of it is a huge long word that starts with "azo"...check your ingredients list) we found an article stating that this preservative is actually illegal to use in something like 7 countries because of how badly most asthmatics react to it, but it is still allowed in the USA!!

Before eating bread with this preservative, my husband had not had an asthma attack in years. Within a week, he had to use 2 epi-pens and an inhaler several times. His mom start making homemade bread for him, and then we discovered that he can eat Pepperidge Farm bread.

Check the preservatives and stay away from the azo stuff if you have asthma!

Whole Wheat Allergy

Whole wheat bread makes my mouth and throat burn and itch. White bread doesn't.

Whole Wheat Allergy

I also have the same problem as the anonymous guest who posted on 4/24/2010. Whenever I eat whole wheat bread I get a very strong scratchy feeling in my throat and the roof of my mouth burns. I had been eating whole wheat with flax every day for about 12 years, but just in this past year I started having these symptoms. It never bothered me before. I can eat white bread and the new whole grain white breads that some of the companies have recently been selling and I eat margarine with flax and that doesn't give me any problems either. I thought that maybe the company that makes the whole wheat and flax bread that I used to eat might have changed something about their product because the company has a new owner now, but other whole wheat breads don't agree with me either. I also had a suspicion for a while that maybe some sort of mold, not visible to the eye had grown on this all natural bread, but this problem of the scratchy throat has been too consistant for that.

Does anyone know if there is a mold on whole wheat that can cause this? Or is it possible to have a whole wheat allergy and not be allergic to white flour? Any information on this would be helpful.

Thanks.

Wheat Sensitivity

It is possible the whole wheat bread you used to eat was long fermented bread. Many people are sensitive to gluten in fast-made bread as it is not fermented long enough.

Some people are intolerant to bran, so they cannot eat whole bread but can eat refined white bread. As refined flour still has some bran in it, they may feel better when they avoid all wheat-based foods.

Wheat flour contents?

I need someone to settle a "disagreement" for me. A friend, who never dieted until
he met with a nutritionist (who was selling a weight loss product by the way) told him to eliminate ALL breads from his diet..."whole wheat bread is made with white
flour" ... I say if it says 100% whole wheat, whole grains" there is NO white flour.
Who is right? :)

To make white bread, the

To make white bread, the wheat kernel is broken apart and the outer shell is not used, while the inside is used. The outer part has the most nutrients by the way. So the inside is then processed (as white flour) with high heat (killing more nutrients) and added with other stuff to make processed white bread. Whole wheat bread uses the entire kernel to make the bread and keeps most of the nutrients. So, there is no white flour used to make whole wheat bread. But, the kernels to make both white and wheat bread come form the same source - wheat plants. BTW..Eliminating all breads is not practical. It is better to have whole grains in moderation than to cut out the group completely.

Thank you

Thank you for the excellent explanation.

reaction to white bread

the last 12 months have seen a reaction from eating white bread or white rice , my asthma and skin has played up i have skin rashes on my upper part of my arms ,lower part of my legs, i have tried everything medical but no effect all i can put it down to is white bread and rice, i am now on brown bread ,my skin is getting better slowly
I am drinking more water as well. does anybody else have this problem?

Hi, i have a reaction every

Hi, i have a reaction every time i have white bread too - i get really really bloated and then get back and stomach pain as though there's too much gas in my abdomen. The symptoms subside after 1-2 hours. I've been managing it by not eating white bread (strangely, i don't have symptoms after eating wholemeal bread) but in the last coupld of week's i've had reactions from cakes made with white flour too - something that's not happened before. I've booked in to see a doctor on friday. I don't expect there's any treatment but it'd just be nice to know exactly what's going on and to have any allergies confirmed.

me too!!!

Gemma!
I would love to hear what your doctor told you. I had been complaining for nearly a year about stomach pains that progressively got so bad that I could not eat anything without being doubled over with bloating pain. Finally, I had a colonoscopy and an endoscopy done... they found nothing. My doctor told me to take Probiotics daily and up my fiber intake. I have a follow up meeting with him the end of this month. Since then, I have noticed by process of elimination that whenever I eat any foods with white flour... I am in pain. Wheat flour, or whole grains... absolutely nothing! It's the white flour! It's weird though... he told me that I have a hyper-sensitive digestive system. I would think that whole grains would bother me. Would love to hear from you!

reaction every time I eat wheat

I also get the pain you are describing, but only when I eat whole wheat products. The pain shoots up my arm and makes me double over with pain, then after a while it goes away. I also get very gassy

I have the same problem

I have the same problem after eating white bread pasta or rice or cookie and cakes made with white flour...I have no clue why whole grains go down smoother but I just stay away from the stuff...I get so bloated afterwards and sometimes naseous. My hydrocolon therapist has hooked me up with some probiotics and digestive enzyme pills to help me digest food overall better but I just still cant do white bread

Whole Wheat vs. White

The comment has been moved to the Questions section: A substitute for people with allergies to whole wheat bread.

white bread allergy

Hey I am here with the opposite problem.. all I can eat is wheat bread and brown rice.
I have a WHITE FLOUR allergy, I cannot eat white bread or white rice. I get immediate reaction of joint getting weak and tingly my eyes gets weak and tightness in throat and stiff neck, I am not kidding then I get into half coma sleep..
anyone heard of this.

Microbial flora

Please can you help me with information on the microbial flora of wheat and white bread

Whole Wheat

I am not able to eat whole wheat bread, because it gives me runny stools and causes the valve in my esophagus to stick open and then lots of acid reflux follow. Whole wheat also bloats me up.
Corn bread and wheat white bread are fine for me.
Also psyllyium ground fiber that is often found in colon cleansers causes the same reaction to me as whole wheat.
Sincerely, Robert

Just wondering...

Have you been tested for celiac disease? It is gluten intolerance and can cause serious side affects to your intestines if a gluten free diet is not used. Just a thought. Good luck.

whole grain

i soak my whole wheat pasta in a pot of water for probably 5 to 8 hours. i put it in the refrigerator. when am ready to cook , i drain the water and pour my pasta into a boing water and cook for 7 mins. that actaually help with digestion. before, i tried this method, my system will not digest whole wheat pasta. now, am loving it.

Still trying to narrow it down.

I am finding it really difficult to find out what foods are creating my allergy but I've narrowed it down.
Some of the big problem foods are,
- wholewheat bread
- mini wheatabix
- packaged sandwiches
Symptoms are sharp, stabbing pains in my abdomen, followed by 4 hours of 'runny' trips to the toilet.
I am going to get tests done but in the meantime the idea of a journal sounds like a great idea.

Chris.

tests to have done...

Do some research on Celiac disease and request tests to be done for that. If you have it you will need to follow a gluten free diet. Good Luck with it.

multiple food allergies

i used to eat everything whole grain and whole not realizing that it causing my asthma and skin breakouts so i went to an allergist and come to find out im allergic to whole wheat, nuts/peanuts, and fish. i went on an elimination diet for a while because i was so scared to eat anything that would give me a reaction i even cut out soy becuase its in the same family as peanuts, so i lost alot of weight, i finally got over it and started adding stuff back into my diet and i dont have any problems eating white/enriched flour, and i havnt been able to find any other types of bread in my area. and since i have added that back into my diet my weight is starting to go up. how can i eat realistically healthy with all these allergies and get the fiber i need?

allergy to whole or multi grain bread

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this problem of allergy to whole grain bread. I'm not allergic to wheat or gluten, but give me a slice of ANY whole or multi-grain bread, either baker or home made (with one exception) and I end up a screaming mess on the floor for about six hours with a stomach ache to end all of them.
There is only one kind of grain bread I can eat, which is Vogels' original or ancient grains bread. And I'll be honest, I'm terrified they'll change how they make it. There has to be a chemical action somewhere, with an additive (Vogels do not use additives) that creates a reaction that reacts badly. But there is so little information out there. I have found quite a number of people who are like me - but even the net with all it vast resources, has no answer that I can find. If anyone knows what it is that happens, or why it happens, I'd be very pleased to know. I suffer from the same thing with avocados and there is some thought it could be a latex allergy, but if it was that, there'd be other things I'd be allergic to which I am not.

I thought I was the only one

I thought I was the only one with this problem! Like you, I can eat Vogels, but not ANY other whole grain bread without having the mother of a stomach ache to make me a heap on the flour for six to eight hours. Avocado (NZ ones, used to be good with Aussie ones) has the same effect. But gee, I'd love to know what is causing it.

Wheat Intolerance??

I've just started trying to eat healthier, but every time I eat whole-wheat pasta, etc., I get a migraine. Could I be allergic to whole grains? What could my problem be?

Question about whole wheat products

I've done some research online about wheat allergies. I've just started eating healthier and have been eating whole wheat pasta, but every time I do it, it I become extremely sick to my stomach. So I thought I may be allergic to the whole wheat. But after doing the research, it says that there is wheat in almost all store bought products. And I don't get sick from those. So what could be the problem?

Wheat pasta

It has a lower glucemic index than normal pasta, so it will not be digested as quickly. Wheat pasta takes longer to digest. I think it may be too heavy for you so you may want to change to spinach pasta or mix regular with some wheat pasta instead of pure wheat pasta.
